About Firmware

Firmware is a program much like software on computers. Printer OEMs update printer firmware regularly to add features and/or improve function. With the latest printer firmware information a knowledgeable aftermarket supplier can troubleshoot firmware related problems and prevent future problems by keeping customer’s printer firmware up to date.

In 2006 Hewlett Packard® was granted U.S. patent #7043166 B2, allowing HP to install printer firmware on a computer chip installed on a consumable, such as a toner cartridge. When this cartridge is installed in an HP printer it can automatically install new firmware into the printer. This can occur without notice, intervention, or awareness of the end user.

We believe the primary purpose of this technology is to enable HP to regularly update the firmware in millions of printers without depending on the end user. Printer firmware updates generally fix bugs, problems, glitches, etc. And new firmware can also enable new printer functionality. If an aftermarket chip is a fractional design, based on a partial emulation of the OEM design, it can be rendered dysfunctional by a firmware update. This has occurred with some aftermarket chip designs in the past.

Our chip would be unaffected.

There are other ways to update firmware as well. Firmware updates can be pre-loaded into a printer when it’s manufactured. These updates can then be triggered by virtually any printer event conceivable: page count, job count, calendar date, power cycles, etc.

Static Control knew that only a total system emulation approach would be capable of facing the technology challenges that lay ahead.

We spend an enormous amount of time and money reverse engineering the OEM printer/chip system so that we can design very robust emulations that we execute on our own custom-designed digital chips. We are confident that the level of completeness of our emulations of chips for OEM applications will prevent our chips from being rendered dysfunctional by OEM printer firmware updates.
